The global smartphone market concluded 2024 on a positive note, according to the preliminary report by the International Data Corporation (IDC). The fourth quarter (Q4) of 2024 marked the sixth consecutive quarter of growth, with worldwide shipments reaching 331.7 million units—up 2.4% compared to Q4 2023.
Market Leaders and Movers
Apple and Samsung continued to dominate the smartphone market in 2024, despite both experiencing slight declines in shipments compared to the previous year. Apple shipped 76.9 million units in Q4, capturing a 23.2% market share, while Samsung shipped 51.7 million units, holding 15.6% of the market. Both companies remain resilient leaders in the competitive smartphone market 2024.
Meanwhile, Xiaomi maintained its third position with a shipment of 42.7 million units, showing a year-over-year growth of 4.8%. Vivo emerged as a strong contender, experiencing a 12.7% growth in shipments—the highest among the top five manufacturers—tying with Transsion for fourth place.
Yearly Insights
For the full year 2024, global smartphone shipments totaled 1.238 billion units, a 6.4% increase from 2023. Apple and Samsung held the top two spots, although both saw marginal declines in annual shipments. Xiaomi demonstrated remarkable growth with a 15.4% increase, shipping 168.5 million units over the year.
Transsion and Oppo tied for fourth place, reflecting the dynamic nature of the smartphone market 2024. Transsion’s annual growth of 12.7% underscores its growing presence in the global market.
R&D Focus Shifts Away from Foldables
IDC highlighted a noticeable shift in R&D priorities. “Vendors have started shifting R&D away from foldables as consumer interest remains flat. AI advancements are being prioritized, particularly in premium devices,” said Anthony Scarsella, IDC’s research director for Client Devices.
Outlook for 2025
The smartphone market 2024 ended on a high note, paving the way for optimism in 2025. However, challenges remain. “The threat of new and increased tariffs from the new US administration has elevated uncertainty across the industry,” noted Nabila Popal, senior research director at IDC.
